Amazon has published a job listing for a “Digital Currency and Blockchain Product Lead,” at its Seattle offices.
It appears that Amazon is looking to delve deeper into digital currency and blockchain technology with a new job posting on its website. The listing is for a Digital Currency and Blockchain Product Lead to be a part of its Seattle-based Payments Acceptance & Experience team. The team is in charge of all customer payments globally on Amazon sites.
The listing states that the team is looking to add a product lead specializing to develop Amazon’s strategy for digital currency and blockchain products. The position requires that the product manager use their expertise in Blockchain, Distributed Ledger, Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC), and Cryptocurrency to create a product roadmap for the future. Cases must be made for different digital currencies and whether they should be adopted by Amazon.
The new lead will also drive the overall vision of the product, shaping a lot of Amazon’s future in the digital asset world.
Amazon’s interest in cryptocurrency
While Amazon hasn’t made many public steps towards adopting cryptocurrency usage, this most recent job posting suggests a possible future where consumers can use digital currency to purchase things on Amazon.
Amazon’s interest in cryptocurrency as a means of payment has shifted over the years. In 2017, Amazon Pay VP at that time, Andy Jassy, told CNBC that the company was not planning to accept crypt because there was no demand for them to do so. Now, in 2021, the demand has grown and Amazon appears to have changed its tune.
It is worth noting that this new job listing is by far the only job pertaining to blockchain or cryptocurrency on Amazon’s website. It is just that the other listings are not as senior level as the product lead. In fact, there are dozens of blockchain-related listings on the Amazon job board in software development, operations IT & support engineering, and Sales advertising & account management.
In a statement to Business Insider, a spokesperson for Amazon confirmed the job posting and added, “We’re inspired by the innovation happening in the cryptocurrency space and are exploring what this could look like on Amazon. We believe the future will be built on new technologies that enable modern, fast, and inexpensive payments, and hope to bring that future to Amazon customers as soon as possible.”
